MAYA BANNER STOLEN

MAYA would like to share the regrettable news that a banner that we erected along Feruka road opposite the Golden Peacock hotel was uprooted and stolen by unknown charlatans on the night of 26/05/21.

As MAYA, we are naturally taken aback by this deliberate and unmitigated vandalism of our property, however, we would not speculate on the motive behind this uncivilized act. We leave the matter for our capable law enforcement to do their investigations and apprehend those responsible in the fulness of time.

We note with concern the rise in vandalism and theft of private and public property in and around the city and we categorically denounce this criminal and irresponsible behavior which takes us back to the stone age. We have seen road signs, taps, zesa cables, toilet doors, railway sleepers, even park benches stolen or vandalized. This is wrong and we must put an end to such activities and promote Ubuntu.

We urge citizens especially the people of Mutare to take pride in our collectively owned property and protect it not only for ourselves but for future generations.

Though the banner that was stolen had MAYA written on it belonged to us all because the environment we are protecting is for all Mutareans. We all deserve rich biodiversity, clean air, and an unsilted sakubva river. Protecting the environment is in the good interest of everyone. Those who steal or vandalize public property are the enemy of the people.

The theft of the banner, however, does not in any way stop MAYA from conducting its mandate of protecting the environment and we hereby reaffirm our resolve to protect our environment and raise citizen agency around climate and environmental justice.
