Manica Youth Assembly (MAYA) in partnership with ARDEZ, Clean & Save and Nurses took part in the National Clean Up activity by cleaning at the Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital in Mutare. The event was graced by the presence of the Anglican Diocese of Manicaland, the Right Rev. Bishop Eric Ruwona and some members from the Anglican Church, nurses and staff at Victoria Chitepo Provincial hospital. The ARDEZ (Anglican Relief and Development in Zimbabwe and the members from Clean and Save also participated in the Clean Up campaign themed “Safeguarding the integrity of creation’’.

The theme, which is biblical reference to the sanctity of creation makes it clear  that the Lord created the earth in perfect harmony and balance which condition is now threatened by humans because of there unquenchable thirst for resources. It is common cause that the planet is on the verge of Armageddon because of the activities of man.

The clean up is one of the actions that MAYA and stakeholders are undertaking to mitigate the problem at hand of mounting litter. Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital is Manicaland’s biggest referral centre which needs everyone’s support so that its core business of saving lives takes place under a conducive environment.

The clean up was followed up by a tree planting session where MAYA and stakeholders planted 10 trees at Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital. Trees do not only provide shade and protectingbuildings from adverse weather conditions such as storms and high winds but most importantly trees have a therapeutic effect on people, especially those recuperating  from different ailments.

Trees also have or add aesthetic value and  and homeliness of the Hospital since nature has its own way of healing the souls of not just the sick people but of mother earth which has been perforated by carbon emissions and destruction of forests/ trees which should act as sponge. By planting trees, it one way to combat the negative effects of climate change. MAYA would like to acknowledge and express gratitude to all the wonderful people and stakeholders who took part in the Clean Up and tree planting session and to encourage them to keep on the good work of keeping the environment clean  Some patients take more time to heal due to lack of a beautiful atmosphere and environment to interact with. Climate change and deforestation are real and we should combat its effects.
