April 22nd marked exactly 53 years since the first Earth Day commemorations commenced. This year’s theme for Earth Day is “Invest in Our Planet “.
As we celebrate the fertility, grace and resilience of mother Earth, it is an opportunity for us to raise awareness, advocate and take action for progressive and sustainable change regarding issues that are pausing an existential threat to our only planet which is Mother Earth. The urgency of climate justice should inspire us all to spring to action on Earth Day.
This day should remind us that our commitments to protect and safeguarding our planet must be ongoing throughout the year. The climate crisis is a daily reality, and responsible for this crisis are experiencing the majority of its devastating impacts
It is man’s greediness, over consumption and extractivism that has led to depleted environments and social inequity, as 80% of the world’s natural resources are used by just 20% of the population. It is a fact the fossil fuel industry for example reportedly makes an estimated $2.8 billion in profits per day for the last 50 years yet they have done nothing to give back towards rehabilitating the obvious damage that this industry has done to the planet.
It is high time that these environmental and climate vandals are held responsible and they begin to pay their debt they owe to mother earth. The frenetic armed race which has seen some world powers investing trillions of dollars in weapons of “earth destruction” should be advised that they must STOP this and instead pool these resources towards climate action.
It is time to take action now because our lives depend on it. When we Invest in Our Planet together, we are supporting healthy, Happy and wealthy communities.
