As we mark the 44th anniversary of Zimbabwe’s independence from colonial rule, the Manica Youth Assembly reflects on the progress made and the challenges that lie ahead, particularly in the realm of climate and environmental justice. We stand proud to celebrate this historic milestone, recognizing the sacrifices made by our forebears in the struggle for liberation.

At the same time, we acknowledge that our fight for true freedom encompasses not only political sovereignty, but also environmental stewardship and sustainable development. The youth of Zimbabwe are the custodians of the future, and we are committed to actively participating in the governance processes that will shape our nation’s environmental policies and practices.

Our organization, is dedicated to advocating for youth involvement in climate action and environmental governance. We believe that the voices of young people must be heard and amplified in decision-making processes that affect the natural world upon which our livelihoods depend. As we honor the legacy of independence, we call for a renewed commitment to environmental justice, sustainable development, and effective climate action. We urge our leaders to prioritize the protection of our precious ecosystems and to engage the youth in shaping policies that will safeguard our environment for generations to come.

However, we would like to draw attention to the deteriorating state of the Chikanga recreation facility. It has now been abandoned, leaving the youth in the area without a safe and accessible space for recreation and sports. We commend the City of Mutare for their efforts in revamping Sakubva stadium and Chisamba ground, providing much-needed facilities for the youth in our community. We urge the local authority to prioritize the rehabilitation of the Chikanga sports ground, ensuring that the youth have a conducive environment to engage in healthy activities.

It is essential for our future generations to have access to well-maintained recreational facilities that promote physical and mental well-being. We call on the authorities to take action and invest in the Chikanga sports ground, showing their commitment to supporting the growth and development of our youth.

Happy Independence Day, Zimbabwe!
